September 18: “Getting to Know the Boston Area”

Walking Tours around town:

Join staff members and share their expertise about different areas of Boston. The tours begin in the afternoon and continue for approximately 2 hours:

  1. The North End: history (Paul Revere and the Revolution); immigrants (Irish, Italian) and modern culture (restaurants, Italian markets). Begins at 1:00pm - meet in the Transportation Building by the Stuart Street entrance (Dunkin Donuts).
  1. History of Boston: Journalism (beginning with Benjamin Franklin to the present). Tour important journalism sites in Boston. Begins at 2pm - meet in the lobby of Little Building (80 Boylston Street).
  1. Harvard Square: Must pay for subway ride over and back; the “other school,” historical sites, shops, restaurants, and street musician sites. Tour leaves at 1pm in the Little Building (80 Boylston Street).
  1. Diversity Tour: Tour of important diverse sections of Boston. Tour leaves at 2pm from the lobby of Piano Row (150 Boylston Street).
These tours are first-come first-serve, and can hold no more than 20 people each. These tours are for new graduate students only.

Welcome new Graduate Students!

Orientation will begin Thursday, September 10 at 8:30am in the Bill Bordy Theater, located at 216 Tremont St., where you will pick up your materials. The day will go from 8:30 until 5pm. On Friday, September 11, the day will end with a trolley tour of Boston from 2-4 in the afternoon.

Fall Orientation 2009 has been scheduled for September 10th and 11th, and we kindly ask that you reserve the afternoon of the 11th for a trolley tour of Boston, from 2-4pm.

GSA: A Night on the Town

It’s that wonderful time of the year, when classes are almost over and the promise of summer looms large. Join the Graduate Student Association in celebration at the Harbor Side Room, where Emerson grad students from all programs will enjoy dinner, drinks, and dance the night away. With a gorgeous view of the harbor and the North End, this is an event you do not want to miss!

Tickets are $10 each and will be sold at the GSA office in Piano Row on Monday (4/27), Tuesday (4/28), and Wednesday (4/29) from 4:00 - 6:00 pm. Please be sure to bring your student ID with you!

Please remember to bring your ticket, Emerson ID, and gov’t issued ID to the event (since there will be a bar).

Tickets are for Emerson grad students only.

2009 Departmental Awards

Celebrating Emerson Graduate Student Excellence

The Awards
The Emerson College Graduate Departmental Awards honor significant achievements in graduate study at Emerson College. Graduate students may submit work that was produced for a class or as part of their Master’s Project or Thesis at Emerson.

Eligibility
Entries must be submitted by students who graduated in December 2008 or who will graduate in May or August 2009. Students may compete for the award by submitting one example of his or her work; coop- erative work may be submitted. If the entry wins, the authors will split the prize. Graduating students may collaborate with non-graduating students; however, if the entry wins, only the graduating student may receive the prize at this time. The non-graduating student may submit the same piece in the future when he/she is eligible.

Submissions
All submissions for consideration should be typed and legible. Each entry must be accompanied by a cover sheet containing the following information:

  1. Entrant’s name, current and summer addresses
  2. Title of work
  3. Signed statement that the entry is the author’s original work, and including the purpose for which it was written

Graduate Commencement Speaker

We are looking for nominations and/or self-nominations for a graduating student to be the Spring 2009 Graduate Commencement speaker. If you graduated in December 2008 or will be graduating in May 2009 and are interested, please read the following information:

Eligibility:
The speaker must have graduated in December 2008 or will beg raduating in may 2009. The speaker should have a strong academic record, and the support of his/her Graduate Program Director.

The Speech:
The speech is to be no more than three minutes in length and must be on a topic of interest to Emerson graduate students.

To Apply:
Submit a nomination for someone by providing his/her name and program to the Office of Graduate Studies. The student will be contacted to determine if he/she is interested in submitting a speech outline. To nominate yourself, submit your name, program, and an outline of your proposed speech. Please include an e-mail address and phone number where you can be reached.

Nominations are due Wednesday, April 8, 2009.
